The LCA.no EPD generator will begin the transition to following the standard EN 15804: 2012 + A2: 2019 from the second quarter of 2022.
EN 15804+A1 vs. EN 15804+A2
Environmental indicators
- The + A2 version of the standard uses indicators that are different from + A1 indicators, to harmonize with PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) from the EU.
- There are more indicators in the + A2 version of the standard than + A1.
- In addition, almost all of the previous indicators use other scientific methods for calculating potential environmental impact.
- This applies to both the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions such as Global Warming Potential (GWP) which now uses 4 different indicators, but also e.g. acidification AP (acidification potential) which previously had unit SO2-eq and now with + A2 has unit mol H + eq.
This difference means that EPDs according to the + A1 version of EN 15804 can not be used as a data basis for EPDs according to + A2.
Generic data
During a transition period, it will therefore be necessary to use generic data or average data for materials that used to be based on EPD data until EPDs according to + A2 are available.
For example, EPDs from crushed stone and gravel manufacturers that were used as raw materials in A1 in EPDs for concrete and asphalt. Previously it was possible to choose between several datasets based on EPDs from manufacturers.
It is assumed that most manufacturers will update their EPDs according to the +A2 standard within 6-12 months, but there is no requirement for this in the EPD system. In theory, EPDs can be published according to EN 15804 + A1 until December 2022 and then be valid for 5 years.
Contact your suppliers to request EPDs according to the new standard.
